In a recent article by Stephen Kappel, Head of Data at Code Climate, he guides engineering leaders through the hype of generative AI.

Efficient evaluation of potential machine learning (ML) projects
Kappel emphasises the risk of unreal expectations in implementing an OpenAI model into an application for it to result in high-quality automation. He advises extracting the 'what' from the idea and discovering feasible projects with strong stakeholder backing.
Kappel also outlines the strengths and weaknesses of AI. For example, ChatGPT lacks a concept of "confidence level" and access to "live" information.
However, he suggests possible solutions.
Including Bayesian ML models, modern streaming architectures, and fine-tuning models with domain-specific examples.
Kappel emphasises that organisations need someone who understands what ML can and cannot do for their business. To evaluate potential ML projects, he proposes a checklist considering factors like the availability of high-quality data, defining 'good enough,' and examining whether simpler approaches have been attempted.
